The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has said adopted the door-to-door distribution of relief materials to internally displaced persons (IDPs) because of a barrage of diversion and irregularities in the distribution of the items.
IDPs in the North-East had in the past accused camp and other officials saddled with the management of relief materials from government and other philanthropic organisations of diverting them for personal gains.
NEMA spokesman, Sani Datti, indicated that the exercise launched by the Acting President in Maiduguri, Borno State, commenced with the distribution of 30,000 metric tonnes of relief materials to Bakassi IDPs.
He reaffirmed the commitment of NEMA’s director-general, Mustapha Maihaja, to promote transparency and accountability in the distribution exercise, ensuring that the materials were delivered to affected IDPs.
He said the agency has concluded plans to distribute millet, sorghum, beans, rice, soya beans and maize to IDPs in the camps and those in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe and Bauchi communities every quarter.
NEMA appealed to the UN and humanitarian bodies to support its programmes to aid the rehabilitation of the returnee IDPs in the North-East and elsewhere affected by natural or human-induced disasters.
