The United States Mission in Nigeria has stated that Nigerian students with valid F1 and J1 visas remain eligible to travel and study in the United States despite the new restrictions

The mission explained that these exemptions are to enable Nigerian students and exchange visitors with valid visas to continue their learning process and will not be affected by the partial visa suspension introduced under Presidential Proclamation 10998.

The mission made this known in a post on X on Monday, certifying that Nigerian students and exchange visitors with valid visas will not be affected by the partial visa suspension introduced under Presidential Proclamation 10998.

“Nigerian students and exchange participants with currently valid F1 and J1 visas are not affected by Presidential Proclamation 10998.

“Students and exchange participants with visas can continue to contribute to learning, research and innovation at U.S. colleges and institutions,” the statement read.

The clarification follows the enactment of Presidential Proclamation 10998 on January 1, 2026, which is titled “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States”.

The partial ban, which went into force on the same day, affects 19 nations, including Nigeria.

The United States has implemented a number of immigration-related policies that affect Nigerians in recent months. The majority of non-immigrant visas granted to Nigerians were limited to three-month single-entry visas earlier this year.
