For Joy Orude, it was dream come true as large crowd of teenagers, children, adults and widows graced the maiden edition of her Joy & Kuro Empowerment Foundation’s outreach held recently at Basketball Pitch, Navy Barracks, Ajeromi/Ifelodun, Lagos.
According to Joy, for over 20 years, she had nurtured the vision of giving back to the Ajegunle community. Hear her: “I was born and brought up in Ajegunle. I grew up with my grandma and I was taught to spread the wings. So, it’s a great dream come true for me. Seeing my people gathered today just because of the Foundation makes me glad.”
Joy, who resides in Germany, revealed that she grew up in Achakpo area of Ajegunle and coming home on holidays, she noticed some children were out of school, hawking and loafing around. So, to make the dream of giving back achievable, the couple returned home during the Yuletide and put smiles on the faces of Ajegunle residents with a medical outreach and distribution of foodstuffs and apparel to over 300 women.
“We are taking some children out of the streets, back to school. They don’t have to hawk. We have noticed that a lot of these children hawk on daily basis to assist their families, instead of being in school.
“Ajegunle is one of the best places to stay in Lagos. We accommodate people. Check our legends: Daddy Showkey, Oritshafemi, Ruth Kadiri, etc. I’m thankful to God that I came home to give back to my society,” she enthused.
Joy Orude, however, revealed plans to divide the outreach into three parts, annually targeting different groups of kids. “Our goal is to give these children hope and a future,” she said while announcing a series of impactful initiatives aimed at transforming Ajegunle through education, health and social support.
