Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has opened up on her decision to step away from the Nigerian movie industry and relocate overseas, saying she chose motherhood over her flourishing acting career.
The 59-year-old actress made the disclosure during an appearance on The Morayo Show, explaining that she left Nigeria to be with her children, who were living abroad at the time.
Wright, who made her return to the screen in January 2025 with her role in Something About the Briggs after years away from acting, said she does not regret the decision and would make the same choice again if faced with it.
“I left the country many years ago because of my children, and I would do it over and over again if I had to. I think I need to apologise for leaving without letting my fans know, but mama duty called,” she said.
The actress explained that her children needed her presence more than she needed her career, particularly because they were growing up outside Nigeria.
“My children were abroad, and we all know how difficult it can be for boys to be without a mother’s love. So, I was ready to leave everything behind for them because they are my future.”
Speaking on her return to the movie industry, Wright revealed that she decided to revive her 2008 film Omotara Johnson after years of requests from fans.
“My fans asked for the sequel to Omotara Johnson. They wanted it, so I decided to bring it back,” she said.
She also disclosed that she kept her acting comeback away from the public until production had been completed.
“I didn’t tell anybody I was coming back. A lot of people didn’t know I was shooting because I kept everything to myself. I’ve learnt that when you keep things close to your heart, they manifest better, and that really worked for me.
“…It’s the return of Omotara Johnson and the return of Bukky Wright, and I’m here to stay.”
Wright’s experience mirrors that of several other Nollywood stars who temporarily left the industry to focus on raising their families, including veteran actress Sola Sobowale, who previously revealed she paused her career while her children attended universities in the United Kingdom.
