She is a holder of Guinness Book of World’s Record. Thanks to Danceathon, the dance platform that catapulted her into the limelight.
However, beneath the glitz and glamour, it has been revealed that the happily married Kaffy was a nerd in secondary school. She went home with straight As back-to-back and her classmates had no idea she’d end up a dancer, because her dream was to be an Aeronautical Engineer.
In a chat with TS Weekend, Andrew Adagha, Kaffy’s close pal at Coker Secondary School, Surulere, Lagos, disclosed: “Kaffy joined us in 1996 when we were in SS2. Kaffy was a very serious minded person at everything she did. She was a staunch Muslim who always wore her hijab to school. She was also very active in sports. She played soccer, basketball and cricket. After secondary school, she attended a coaching clinic at the National Stadium where she won a scholarship to study abroad but unfortunately, she couldn’t make it probably due to financial reasons. Back then, Kaffy and her sister, Bimbo, were living with their guardian in Surulere, Lagos. We did not know anything about her parents but we knew she used to live with her guardian.”
What kind of a person was she? “She was very brilliant. She was the first person from whom I heard the word Aeronautic Engineering. Her dream was to study Aeronautic Engineering. That was her passion from time. I’m surprised she ended up a dancer. We used to study together and she was first to answer any question in class.
“Kaffy was on the big side then but she carried her weight with so much grace. She has always had carriage. She was not dancing then, nobody knew her as a dancer. I am happy today that she has turned out a successful dancer and a role model to a lot of Nigerian girls on the need to be hard working,” Agagha concluded.
