Wema Bank is setting its sights on reclaiming its place among Nigeria’s top-tier banks, as it celebrates eight decades of service, innovation and resilience.

Speaking at the weekend during a grand Gala Night in Lagos themed ‘Timeless Elegance’, the bank’s Managing Director, Mr. Moruf Oseni, affirmed Wema Bank’s renewed ambition to lead the future of financial services in Nigeria and beyond.

“We have a bold vision for Nigeria’s financial future. Our immediate aim is to reclaim our place at the industry’s forefront,” Oseni declared.

He emphasized that the bank’s strategy would be driven by continuous innovation, digital transformation, and customer-centric solutions.

“We’ll keep innovating, using technology to offer financial services that empower Nigerians and Africans to succeed wherever they are,” he said.

Oseni also highlighted the importance of nurturing future talent and celebrated the vital role women have played — and continue to play — in shaping the banking sector.

“At Wema, we call ourselves knights — skilled, ready to face challenges, and fulfil our God-given potential,” he said, sharing the bank’s internal identity aimed at fostering unity and purpose. Earlier in the evening, Dr. Oluwayemisi Olorunshola, Chairman of the Board, took the audience on a historical journey, reflecting on the bank’s origins in 1945 as Agbomagbe Bank — the first indigenous bank established during Nigeria’s colonial era.

“We celebrate God’s grace, foresight, resilience, hard work, and inclusivity — traditions we proudly uphold,” she said.

Dr. Olorunshola described Wema Bank’s legacy as one marked by courage and endurance through decades of change — from wars to economic booms and global financial shifts.

“It was these values that gave our founder the courage to establish Agbomagbe Bank under colonial rule. What a solid foundation,” she said.

“We’re not just counting years — we’re celebrating seasons, generations, eras, and transformational milestones.”

The high-profile celebration was attended by dignitaries including Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by his Special Adviser on Job Creation and MSME, Mr. Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, and renowned philanthropist, Chief Kessington Adebutu.

In his goodwill message, Vice President Shettima hailed Wema Bank’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic development, stating that the institution had “stood the test of time” and played a significant role in shaping the country’s financial evolution.

Chief Adebutu commended the bank’s foresight, resilience, and transformation from humble beginnings to a leading force in the industry.
