The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has ordered the immediate closure of Mining Licence 11810 in Zuraq, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, following the tragic deaths of villagers allegedly exposed to poisonous gas while mining.

The affected site is operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited, owned by Abdullahi Dan-China.

Preliminary reports indicate that the victims were mining in an abandoned lead pit believed to emit sulphuric oxide gas when the incident occurred.

In a condolence call to Plateau State Governor, Barr Caleb Mutfwang, the minister expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and described the incident as “deeply painful”.

He urged the governor to convey his sympathy to the bereaved families and the people of Wase.

Alake has dispatched a high-powered investigative team led by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr Yusuf Yabo, to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the disaster.

The team includes mining engineers, environmental compliance experts and specialists in artisanal mining operations. They are expected to recommend sanctions where violations are established.

According to ministry sources, the mining company reportedly ceded the pit to members of the community following agitations for empowerment.

Unaware of the toxic emissions from the abandoned site, villagers allegedly engaged in mineral extraction and inhaled the hazardous gas.

Mining Licence 11810 lies between longitudes 10°34’45” and 10°35’50” and latitudes 9°13’45” and 9°14’40”.

The minister assured that further details would be made public as investigations continue.
