WAEC, NECO fees should not be paid by students — Aisha Yesufu

Activist and politician Aisha Yesufu has argued that Nigerian students should not be required to pay fees for the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council examinations.

She maintained that every Nigerian child has a right to quality education and should not be denied access because of examination costs.

Her comments come after the Federal Government approved N50,000 for the payment of WAEC and NECO registration fees.

The Federal Ministry of Education gave the approval for the increase of WAEC and NECO fees for Senior Secondary Certification Examination, SSCE, to N50,000 per candidate starting from 2027.

The approval was contained in a new memo dated June 18, 2026 and was signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Adeniji Ibrahim on behalf of the ministry.

Reacting, Yesufu wrote on X: “No student in Nigeria should be paying for WAEC and NECO. Good quality education should be a right Nigerian children enjoy.

“Primary and secondary education is more beneficial to the state than the people. The cost of an uneducated populace is too high for a State.”
