From Obinna Odogwu, Awka
Voters in Anambra Central Senatorial District of Anambra State have declared their total support for Chief Victor Umeh, candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for that senatorial zone in this month’s general elections.
They also declared their support for Prof. Oby Orogbu, the party’s candidate for Awka North and South Federal Constituency; Ferdinand Onwuje, candidate for Awka North state constituency and other LP candidates in the zone.
The voters declared their support for the LP at a town hall meeting organized by the Concerned Anambra Central Voters’ Forum held at Stanel Dome, Awka, the state capital.
Anambra Central is made up of seven Local Government Areas (LGAs), namely: Awka North, Awka South, Anaocha, Njikoka, Dunukofia, Idemili North and Idemili South.
Incidentally, the Presidential Candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi, hails from the senatorial zone; Anaocha LGA in particular.
Addressing the participants at the event, Umeh promised to represent the people very well if elected, saying that he had all it would take to offer the people quality representation.
Umeh, who reminded his audience of the primary duties of a lawmaker, stressed the importance of electing a mature and sound candidate who can withstand the rigours of lawmaking and at same time stand fearlessly for the people when the need arises.
The LP’s senatorial candidate who highlighted some of his achievements during his short stay in the 8th Assembly, said that if given the opportunity to return to the red chamber, he would continue to speak for Ndigbo without fear.
Umeh commended Obi for making himself available to serve Nigeria, saying that he was confident that Obi would repair Nigeria for the good of everyone.
“Mr. Peter Obi is the only hope we have now. We must key behind him and all other Labour Party candidates. We have competent and qualified candidates who have the capacity to change the status quo.
“We will provide quality and outstanding representation for you when we get there because we will be joining our voices to the national debates and issues as they affect you”, he promised.
Also speaking, Prof. Orogbu urged the participants and, indeed, all Nigerians to vote for the LP, saying that they were carefully selected for the job.
“A new Nigeria is coming and you must be part of this story. We are making sacrifices to represent you, so you must also make your own sacrifice by coming out en masse to vote for competence, and to call back those who are not representing you very well.
“It will not be business as usual because we must sacrifice our personal interests for our common interests. You must have to be partners in governance by holding your leaders accountable”, Orogbu, a human development expert said.
Convener of the forum, Dr. Chinedu Onyeizugbe, assured the LP candidates that the voters would vote for them. He told them that all the participants had Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and that they had expressed their willingness to vote for the LP from top to bottom.
