A US-based security expert, Dr. Sylvester Okere, has launched the Okere Sylvester Soccer and Youth Development Foundation (OSSYDEF) with the purpose of nurturing raw soccer talents among the youths in the state to fight social vices.
Okere stated this during the formal inauguration of the Foundation at Obibiezena in Owerri North Local Government Area of the state. He disclosed that the inauguration was the culmination of over 10 years of hard work and planning.
Okere said the mission was to nurture raw talents in football and provide a platform for the youths to showcase their talents and excel, urging them to make good use of the opportunity.
“Our mission is clear: to nurture raw talent and provide a professional platform for youth excellence through rigorous training and strategic sponsorship. We are guided by our motto: “Training Champions for the FUTURE!”
“OSSYDEF is a non-governmental organization dedicated to leveraging the transformative power of sportsmanship to empower the teeming youth within the Owerri North/West Federal Constituency and beyond. Our core objectives are built on talent discovery, educational support through sports scholarships, and moral mentorship—steering our youths toward productive ventures and away from social vices.
“We believe that success is born of hard work, discipline, and teamwork. By fostering these values, we aim to enhance competitive performance and create viable pathways to professional football careers both within Nigeria and on the international stage.
“To our players: I urge you to remain focused and dedicated. The opportunities provided by this foundation are a gateway to your aspirations. Seize them with both hands”, he stated.
Earlier, Barr Izu Osuigwe, Executive Director of the foundation, said: “At OSSYDEF we are committed to providing that platform. Through football, we aim not only to create sports stars, but also to build discipline, teamwork, confidence, and hope for a better future.
“Incidentally, we just got informed this afternoon of a Brazil-based team seeking upcoming footballers from Nigeria and willing to partner with OSSYDEF to actualise that objective.
“Football is our tool, but positive change is our mission.We cannot do this alone. With the support of partners, coaches, parents, and the community, we can turn hidden talent into global excellence and transform lives through sport.”
The high point of the event was the display of football skills by members of the foundation in which prizes were won.
