A United States-based Nigerian woman, Gbemisola G. Akayinode, has been arrested and detained for the murder of her nine-year-old daughter, Oluwasikemi Akayinode.

The incident occurred in Harris County, Texas.

In a Friday statement, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that the suspect left the victim in her parked vehicle.

According to the statement, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled the death a homicide, as a result of hyperthermia.

Gbemisola, 36, was arrested by homicide detectives and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) from the sheriff’s office.

“On July 1, 2025, HCSO Homicide Detectives investigated the death of the child at the 1200 block of Mayo Shell Road.

“The child was found unresponsive inside a vehicle.

“Detectives determined that the mother had left the nine-year-old in the parked vehicle with the back windows partially down while she went to work at thr location,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

She is being charged with felony murder and has been booked in the Harris County Jail.
