Democrat Abigail Spanberger has emerged as the winner of the Virginia governorship race, becoming the first-ever woman to lead the commonwealth.

International media reports that Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in a closely-watched contest, marking a major boost ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

46-year-old Spanberger succeeds outgoing Republican governor Glenn Youngkin, giving control of the governor’s office back to the Democrats.

Her campaign included a focus on economic issues, seen as a potential blueprint for Democrats in the United States in their quest to counter President Donald Trump and the Republicans in major battlegrounds.

Spanberger is a critic of Trump’s economic policies and is known for openly condemning his administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and its role in the federal government shutdown, which she says negatively affected thousands of federal workers in the state.
