In a significant demonstration of his administration’s commitment to internationalization and global academic engagement, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, will, on Monday, August 3, 2026, receive a high-level delegation from the University of Waterloo, Canada, for a four-day strategic visit aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration in research, innovation, academic exchange and capacity development.
The visit, which will run from 3 to 6 August 2026, is expected to reinforce the University’s growing international profile and further advance Professor Ortuanya’s vision of positioning the University of Nigeria as a globally competitive institution through strategic partnerships with leading universities across the world.
A major highlight of the visit will be the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Nigeria and the University of Waterloo. The agreement is expected to establish a framework for long-term cooperation in collaborative research, staff and student mobility, innovation, postgraduate training, academic exchange and other mutually beneficial initiatives.
According to the programme of engagement released by the Director of International Collaborations, Dr. Kelechi E. Nnamani, the official visit will commence on Monday, 3 August 2026, with a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, immediately followed by the formal signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding.
The programme further indicates that on Tuesday, 4 August, members of the delegation will participate in a presentation on the institutional vision, academic profile and strategic priorities of the University of Nigeria, to be delivered by the Director of Academic Planning, Prof Anthony A. Attama. The session will be followed by an interactive engagement with selected Deans and Directors, led by the Director of Research, Innovation and Development, Prof Fabian Ezema, and the Director of Grants and Scholarships, Prof Petra Nnamani, to identify areas of mutual interest and develop practical pathways for academic and research collaboration.
According to the UNN Director of International Collaborations, activities scheduled for Wednesday, 5 August, will take place at the Niger Hall of CEC, Nsukka Campus, where members of the University community will engage in a series of high-level presentations by distinguished scholars from the University of Waterloo. These include a session on institutional governance and administrative structures of University of Waterloo by Dr. Grant Leach, Senior Recruiter and Business Development Strategist; a presentation on developing international research partnerships through the Pan-African Initiative for Research (PAIR) by Dr. Adra Raine, Associate Director of PAIR; and a strategic engagement on expanding collaboration with the University’s Faculties of Arts and Engineering to be facilitated by Dr. Onyekachukwu Ezeh of the School of Germanic and Slavic Studies, University of Waterloo.
The visit will conclude on Thursday, 6 August, at the UNN Business School, Enugu Campus, with a specialized presentation on strengthening collaborative research in the health sciences. The session, to be delivered by Dr. Charity Omenka of the School of Public Health, University of Waterloo, will explore emerging opportunities for joint research, innovation, knowledge exchange and capacity building between both institutions.
The University of Waterloo is internationally recognised for its excellence in research, innovation, engineering, entrepreneurship and technology-driven education. Its engagement with the University of Nigeria is expected to create new opportunities for interdisciplinary research, international grant acquisition, faculty development and global academic networking.
The visit represents another milestone in the implementation of Professor Ortuanya’s internationalization agenda, which seeks to expand the University’s global footprint through purposeful partnerships that enhance research productivity, improve academic quality and increase international visibility.
The University community, particularly academic staff, researchers, postgraduate students, Deans, Directors and other stakeholders, is encouraged to actively participate in the scheduled sessions and leverage the opportunities presented by the visit to establish enduring academic and research collaborations.
