The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, yesterday inducted 72 doctors into the medical and dental professions.  The new medical doctors were administered with the oath of medical profession by the Registrar of the Dental and Medical Council of Nigeria.

Delivering the induction lecture, Prof. Frank Imarhiagbe of the University of Benin, who spoke on the topic “The Medical Graduate in Contemporary Nigeria: Navigating the Career Path to the Top” said: “Modern or allopathic medicine is a noble profession that is strictly regulated by ethics with good medical practice as the under guard,” adding, “Navigating career paths to the top or specialist and sub-specialist positions may be tedious but not insurmountable.”

He admonished the newly inducted medical and dental practitioners not to allow pitfalls such as “some specialties are better and more attractive than others; the residency programme is tough and tedious and as such it is advisable to take some time to rest after the MBBS training before embarking on it,” among others to discourage them from giving the practice their all.

Imarhiagbe emphasized that to succeed in medical practice, hard work, counselling and guidance are crucial. “With industry and proper counselling and guidance from seniors there should be no discouragement about reaching the top of your career”, he said, noting that life-long learning is the mantra of medical practice.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, charged the newly inducted doctors to uphold the ethics of the profession and make humanity the centrepiece of their practice.

“While I congratulate you for this feat, I must not fail to admonish you to uphold the ethics of the medical and dental professions as well as making humanity the core of your practice. A simple mistake can lead to litigation which may mar your progression in the practice. You must remain careful at all times not to jeopardize your career,” she said.
