The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is partnering with Opay Digital Services Limited to establish a cybersecurity lab on campus, aimed at enhancing the institution’s data protection and providing a valuable learning environment for students.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution. Prof. Offiong E. Offiong, welcomed the partnership, stating that it aligns with his vision to broaden partnerships that support the university’s growth.
“The university cannot stand alone. It will grow as society grows when we maintain strong ties with corporate organisations, industries and institutions,” he said.
Prof. Offiong praised Opay’s decision to establish the cybersecurity lab, noting that it would help protect the university’s data and equip students with the skills needed to combat cyber threats.
“Training students in cybersecurity is crucial, and we are confident that UNICAL can become a leading source of cybersecurity experts in Nigeria,” he added.
The Director of Partnerships at Opay, Ikponwosa Odiase, said the company is committed to social responsibility and selected UNICAL for its cybersecurity project.

“We are proud of our secure platform; we want to equip the next generation of students to combat fraud and cyber-attacks,” he said.
Opay has pledged to train students and collaborate with UNICAL on upcoming events, including the NUGA games. The partnership is expected to strengthen the university’s cybersecurity capabilities and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s digital economy.
