UNICAL deploys 216 medical scientists to fix Nigeria’s healthcare system

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has deployed 216 newly inducted Medical Laboratory Scientists to strengthen Nigeria’s struggling healthcare system, charging them to lead with innovation, ethics, and technology.

At the 22nd oath taking and induction ceremony at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre, Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Offiong Offiong described the class of 2025 as “problem-solvers, innovators and nation-builders.”

“Learning does not end with graduation. You must continually update your skills to meet the evolving demands of healthcare and technology,”he said.

Offiong who was represented by the Deputy VC (academic), Prof. Ekaete Enang, also encouraged the inductees to remain grateful to their parents, lecturers and the university for their sacrifices and support, while urging them to be worthy ambassadors of the institution, renowned for its culture of excellence.

Induction lecturer, Prof. Paul Inyang-Etoh urged the graduates to adopt digital tools, cost-effective lab management, and quality systems to deliver sustainable services amid economic pressure.

MLSCN Registrar, Dr. Donald Ofili, represented by Nnenaya Nzeaku, advised them to complete their mandatory internship before NYSC and place patient welfare at the center of practice.

Valedictorian Achor Ajuma Victoria pledged that the graduates would uphold UNICAL’s values and serve as worthy ambassadors.

Provost of the School, Prof. Ngim Ngim and Dean Prof. Iya Eze Bassey also charged them to uphold integrity and collaborate to safeguard public health.
