Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has compared petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying motorists in Britain pay more than ₦3,000 for a litre of petrol.
Okpebholo made the comparison in a video circulated on social media on Friday, where he also expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its handling of the economy.
The governor said he visited London recently and decided to compare petrol prices after discussing fuel costs with his friends.
“Nigeria is in a safe hand. When we complained about the cost of petrol, I was in London last week,” he said.
“I told my friends, let’s go and buy fuel just to know the cost of fuel between Nigeria and England. Let me tell you. After conversion, it’s about ₦3,000 something to one litre of fuel. We are doing very well here.”
Official UK data put the average price of unleaded petrol at £1.72 per litre for the week ending September 21, compared with the ₦1,385 per litre Lagos price and ₦1,430 per litre Abuja price listed in the latest NNPC pump-price schedule cited by TheCable.
The comparison, however, reflects pump prices in the two countries and does not by itself measure the full cost of living, household income or motorists’ purchasing power in either economy.
Okpebholo also praised Tinubu, describing the President as an economist working to stabilise the Nigerian economy.
“Our president is not a supermarket man,” the governor said.
“The supermarket people, let them wait. When it’s time for a supermarket to rule Nigeria and technocrats are not here again, then, they will come.”
The governor’s comments come amid continued changes in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, where petrol prices vary by location and are influenced by market conditions.
NMDPRA recently reiterated that petrol prices are determined under the free-market framework provided by the Petroleum Industry Act and that it does not fix pump prices.
