Two in police net for using the name of Kano Governor’s wife to defrauding public

Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly employing the name of the wife of Kano State Governor to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

Specifically, the suspects. Umar Adamu and Husseini Musa were accused of criminal conspiracy, broadcasting false information, injurious falsehood, extortion and a breach of the National Broadcasting code.

A statement by the police spokesperson of the state, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said they put up an advert requesting rather public to part with N3000 to register and participate in the training programme in the area of catering services.

“I greet you the good people of Kano State. A known World Empowerment Organization in collaboration with the Wife of the Kano State Governor will sponsor the training of two thousand (2000) people in catering like Pizza, Shawarma, Burger, Eggroll, Samosa, etc. ”

The announcers, which falsely claimed to be in collaboration with the wife of the state governor, pledged to provide empowerment programme for all at the completion of the training while adding that Arewa Special Shawarma and Multi Special Training Centre will spearhead the training., the police statement held.

Investigation, the police added , has commenced in earnest to establish the culpability or otherwise of the conspirators, their sponsors, the broadcasting codes violated by the media house, ncluding the staff that aired the announcement without balancing the story, which led to the extortion from over fifty people

The police cautioned the public to be wary of fraudsters that use the media for extortion while advising media houses to always scrutinize the authenticity of adverts before airing. End.
