Tunde Onakoya is a celebrated Nigerian Chess master, a dedicated social entrepreneur, and a recent world record holder whose work beautifully merges sport, education, and social impact.

His journey is defined by his passion for Chess and unwavering commitment to using the game as a tool for social change. He grew up facing the harsh realities of poverty in the Ikorodu slum and learned to play Chess at a local barber’s shop.

Ultimately, Chess provided him with a pathway to education. He earned scholarships and represented his school at tournaments, eventually getting a Diploma in Computer Science from Yaba College of Technology.

Today, his story is an inspiring narrative of resilience, innovation, and using a simple game to transform lives and challenge global perceptions of African youth. He has become a symbol of hope, demonstrating that significant achievements can emerge from small beginnings.

With a focus on empowering children in under-served communities across Africa, Tunde Onakoya has trained thousands of children across various Nigerian slums, including Makoko, Oshodi, and Majidun in Ikorodu and secured lifelong academic scholarships for dozens of children who excelled.

For bringing hope to the hopeless through a skill he is passionate about, The Sun Board of Editors chose him as winner of The Sun Young Achiever of the Year Award for 2025.
