US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have jointly insisted that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open, following high-level talks between both leaders, according to the White House.

The two leaders described their meeting as “good” and agreed on the need to guarantee the uninterrupted flow of global energy through the strategic waterway.

“The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy,” the White House said.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global oil and gas transit route, with about one-fifth of the world’s petroleum passing through it.

Iran has significantly disrupted shipping through the strait since its conflict with the United States and Israel escalated on February 28, raising global concerns over energy security.

China is particularly exposed, with more than half of its seaborne crude oil imports coming from the Middle East and passing through the strait, according to maritime analytics firm Kpler.

The White House also said Xi signalled interest in increasing purchases of US oil to reduce China’s dependence on the route, though Beijing’s official statement did not confirm this position.

The readout from the US side did not include any discussion on Taiwan, despite earlier warnings from Xi that tensions over the issue could escalate into conflict if mishandled.

Both countries continue diplomatic engagement as they seek to manage rising geopolitical and energy-related tensions.
