Tributes as ex-Rep, Mike Ugwu, is laid to rest in Enugu

The late Chief Mike Okonkwo Ugwu has been described as a man of integrity, wisdom and service whose influence extended beyond politics into community development and family life.

Dignitaries and sympathisers poured encomiums at the funeral of the  politician popularly known as Ikedimkpa of Affa and former member of the House of Representatives who represented Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency in the second republic, who was laid to rest in his hometown, Amokwu, Affa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State at the weekend.

The late Ugwu served in the House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and was remembered for his contributions to national development, particularly during his tenure as chairman of the House Committee on Telecommunications, where he played a key role in efforts aimed at improving Nigeria’s communication sector.

The burial ceremony attracted a large turnout of political leaders, government officials, community stakeholders, family members, friends, and well-wishers who gathered to pay their final respects to the late elder statesman.

Governor Peter Mbah, represented by Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Uche Ugwu, urged the family to take solace in the remarkable legacy the left politician left behind. “We are gathered not only to mourn his passing but to celebrate a life that touched many people. His contributions, values, and commitment to service will continue to be remembered,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the family, son of the deceased, Mike Ugwu Jr., CEO of FreeMe Digitals and Sony Music Africa, paid an emotional tribute to his father, describing him as a man whose impact would continue to inspire generations.

“My father gave his people a voice, gave his children the tools to succeed, and left behind a name that still carries weight. We will honour him with dignity and continue the values of responsibility, service, and unity that he stood for.”

He further noted that the family would remain committed to preserving their father’s legacy and strengthening the bonds he built within the Affa community and beyond.

The ceremony featured a funeral mass, tributes, cultural displays and a reception attended by guests from different parts of the country, bringing to a close the final rites of one of Udi’s most respected political figures.

Chief Ugwu is survived by children, grandchildren, relatives and numerous associates who continue to celebrate a life marked by public service, leadership, and dedication to community development.

Those in attendance included Chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Hyginus Agu, APC Chairman in Udi LGA, Bona Madu, Chief Oguerinwa Amadi, former Minister of Innovation Science and Technology and gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, senatorial candidate Enugu West, Chief Basil Ani, Chief Cyprian Nnaji, John Edeh, Nweke Sylvester Chinedu, Jude Edeh JKD Odarije 1 of Affa, Prince Ebubedike, Chief Vitus Okechi, state Chairman PDP,  Ambrose Edeh, Deputy State Chairman PDP, Chukwunonye Okereke, State Secretary PDP and Chief Kingsley Nweke, senatorial candidate, Enugu East.
