Traders’ football tournament gets Oct. 9 date

The Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, an umbrella body of Major Market Associations in Lagos has decided to take a break from the usual wheeling and dealing that come with their trade, put on some jerseys, boots and gloves in order to trade tackles on the football pitch.

The association in a programme released by Chinedu Ukatu the Secretary General of the Association who is also the Chairman of the organising committee to the press has made the plans of having the various markets in Lagos compete in a football tournament that will herald an annual fiesta where budding as well as old talents will be showcased.

According to Ukatu, the competition, which is called the National Grand Patron Unity Cup, is scheduled to kick off from October 9, 2022 at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

“The competition is organised under the sponsorship of the National Grand patron of the association, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo (Chairman United Nigeria Airline Limited) who will also be at the opening ceremony to cheer the teams.

“The governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to grace the occasion to give the event the desired punch and relevance. There are about 58 major markets involved in the association out of which 35 expressed interest and are selected to participate in the tournament, but a final list of 16 teams have made the tournament proper.

“There are going to be 4 matches per day with the final coming up on November 19, 2022. The organisers have made adequate arrangements for security and an ambulance is always available to attend to the players and fans alike,” he said.
