The Niger Delta, nestled in the heart of Nigeria’s oil-rich region, boasts a landscape where the production of crude oil and natural gas has long been dominant.

Amidst the towering dominance of crude oil and natural gas in the economic landscape, there exists a quietly thriving sector, palm oil production.

Gift Johnbull, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement for the South-South, is determined to bring this sector into the limelight.

In a recent exclusive interview with The Street Journal, she emphasized the crucial role of aligning with President Tinubu’s agenda to boost palm oil production and enhance food productivity nationwide.

Johnbull’s recent visit to a palm oil-producing facility in Idjerhe, Delta State, provided invaluable insights into the challenges facing this vital sector.

She highlighted the urgent need for modernization and innovation to propel the industry forward.

“I visited the Idjerhe palm oil-producing facility to gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by this vital sector, aligning with the president’s agenda to enhance agricultural practices and boost food productivity in the country, thereby diversifying the economy away from total reliance on crude oil.”

Today, palm oil remains a crucial aspect of Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, with domestic production reaching 1.4 million metric tons, a substantial increase from 850 thousand metric tons in 2009.

The sector is currently hindered by inefficiencies in processing technology, leading to considerable oil losses.

Currently, as much as 50 percent of the potential oil from palm fruits is wasted, amounting to over $600,000,000 at the current price of $815 per ton. This underscores the pressing need for modernization and innovation.

According to the SSA, various initiatives are underway to strengthen the palm oil sector, including providing farmers with easier access to loans and allowing levy-free importation of agricultural machinery.

“Efforts are currently underway to address the challenges within the palm oil sector,” Johnbull stated, underlining her advocacy for initiatives such as easy access to loans for farmers and levy-free importation of agricultural machinery.

“By ensuring a proper trade process, we aim to empower farmers and enhance the overall productivity and sustainability of the industry.”

Despite significant growth in domestic palm oil production, inefficiencies in processing technology continue to plague the sector, resulting in substantial oil losses.

However, Johnbull remains undeterred, championing initiatives to introduce mechanized farming practices and bridge the supply gap.

“With these strategic interventions, I aim to ensure the betterment of our citizens’ livelihoods and unlock the boundless potential of Nigeria’s palm oil industry. Together, we will drive economic growth and foster prosperity across our land.”

As Nigeria charts its course toward a diversified economy, Gift Johnbull stands as a beacon of hope, leading the charge toward a future where palm oil not only fuels economic growth but also nourishes the prosperity of the nation.
