As Nigerians continue to grapple with economic challenges, among others, hoping that 2026 would be far better than what they passed through in 2025, some have shared what they believe should be President Bola Tinubu’s topmost priorities in the new year.

Tinubu should invest in housing development – Ken Omusi, politician; Benin

President Bola Tinubu needs to look into housing development for all Nigerian workers. Let a certain percentage of the tax generated be used for the housing sector. This will reduce the hardship of Nigerian workers and better the lives of Nigerians. The presidency can also create a food development bank to help farmers grow more produce so that Nigerians can have enough food in the country in 2026.

Government should provide stable power supply – Fawaz Muhammad, activist; Benin

During President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign, he clearly identified security and stable power supply as central pillars of his agenda for Nigeria. This year, these promises must translate into visible action, as no meaningful economic or social progress can be achieved without these. At the same time, citizens remain unsafe and businesses struggle under an epileptic electricity supply.

I believe these should remain the president’s topmost priorities. Strengthening national security and fixing the power sector are critical to restoring public confidence, lowering the cost of living, and creating the enabling environment our youths and entrepreneurs need to succeed.

Tinubu should prioritise security – Ndubueze Ikechukwu, public affairs analyst; Aba

The country is presently suffering from endemic insecurity. Nigeria has not had it so bad. The situation has gone so bad that United States of America had to intervene and from every indication, they are not done yet.

It is therefore instructive that President Bola Tinubu should prioritise security in 2026 to avoid the national embarrassment the country suffered through the US airstrikes. It is quite unfortunate that some Nigerians could not safely get to their villages and freely move about as a result of insecurity. Government should do something urgently to tackle this.

Tinubu should checkmate insecurity – Chidera Okechukwu, public servant, Aba

Many people have died as a result of the economic policy of the present administration. Nigerians were grappling with the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy, before they came this January with a new tax regime that will from all indications add to the sapping of the common man.

Insecurity could be checkmated to improve the economic condition of the citizens. President Tinubu should prioritise putting up measures that will in real terms cushion the effect of the economic hardship on Nigerians.

Government should prioritise education and health – Mrs Ruth Baaki, teacher; Makurdi

President Bola Tinubu’s topmost priorities should be in the areas of education and health. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation, so the president should ensure that his 2026 budgetary allocation to these two sectors would meet the needs and demand in both sectors. Schools and hospital infrastructure should be give attention while welfare and remuneration of teachers, lecturers, doctors, nurses and all categories of civil servants be upgraded to meet the economic demands in the country.

We are yet to understand how the new tax system would run or be deducted, but I want to appeal to the president to look into the implications of the tax deductions, especially, as it will affect the ordinary masses who are suffering to meet their daily needs. Farmers should be supported early to produce food while something is done to reduce cost of transportation. These would reduce the high cost of living for Nigerians

He should tackle insecurity – Dr Msonter Anzaa, medical doctor; Makurdi

The first thing the president should prioritise is national security. Let him sustain the current momentum and cooperation with the United States to not only decimate the terrorists, but also prosecute their sponsors. There is also the need to empower sub-national governments to protect their people through initiatives like the state police.

The president should pursue fundamental reforms that restore public trust in our national institutions. He should promote the rule of law, the equality of citizenship, and put in place measures that ensure commensurate reward for labour both in the private and public sectors. These measures will make the country desirable for habitation and enable young Nigerians to see a future for themselves in the country.

Tinubu should tackle insecurity head on – Abraham Dukuma, journalist, Port Harcourt

This year, 2026, which is the eve of another general election, President Tinubu’s most important agenda should be tackling insecurity heads on. He should cooperate with the US President, Donald Trump to flush out terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements across the country.

Tinubu must of necessity, address the yearnings of Nigerians by improving the economy and addressing citizens’ concerns about the tax reforms.

Tinubu should improve our security architecture – Prince Wiro, journalist; Port Harcourt

I expect President Bola Tinubu to improve on the security architecture of the country by crushing threats and impacts of terrorism, banditry, killings by armed men. The president should also improve the living conditions of citizens by creating policies aimed at eradicating poverty.

Tinubu should end insecurity, fight corruption – Anthony Sani, ex scribe, ACF, Kaduna

President Bola Tinubu’s topmost priorities are the old concerns by Nigerians, to wit, to put an end to insecurity that has constituted sand bags on the path to socioeconomic development; to fight corruption which has outsourced our empowerment, opportunity and our future, and then reduce poverty through reduction of ignorance and unemployment.

Tinubu should end insecurity, corruption-Rev. Emmanuel Olorunmagba, cleric; Kaduna

The year 2026 is the year of campaign and as a sitting president who is so much interested in second term, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu topmost priorities should be ending insecurity in Nigeria, reviving the economy and curtailing corruption. These are the three major plagues bedevilling this Tinubu administration.

With the interest of America and Israel in helping Nigeria end insecurity, the government should take the best advantage of the opportunity to completely crush terrorism, banditry or whatever name insecurity go by. And insecurity cannot be effectively curtailed until the sponsors of terrorism as well as terrorists sympathisers are appropriately brought to book.

Secondly, since the All Progressive Congress (APC) took over Nigeria, the economy has continually nosedived and from when President Tinubu took over, the economy has been crashing.

Therefore, hunger has become the major hallmark of the Tinubu administration with prices of food and other essential commodities so high compared to the Buhari administration, which Nigerians even assumed would be the worst in terms of the downturn of the economy in the history of the country. Hence, President Tinubu should focus on reviving the economy to put smile on the faces of Nigerians again.

Thirdly, corruption has become a cancerous tumour in our country and it has become worse in this administration than the previous one. Therefore, despite the removal of subsidy, the country is still plunged in serious debt like never before, and the Tinubu administration still keeps borrowing.

Hence, the fight against corruption should be deliberate, decisive and truthful. And it should start from the presidency down to other elected leaders.  Likewise, the cost of governance should be drastically reduced.
