President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to soldiers killed during a terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, describing them as heroes whose sacrifice will not be forgotten.

The attack, which targeted troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI, occurred in the early hours of Thursday, adding to growing concerns over renewed insurgent activity in the North-East.

Military authorities confirmed that the base came under coordinated assault, with insurgents attempting to breach its perimeter before being pushed back by troops.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the soldiers held their ground under pressure.

“The troops responded with exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” the military said, noting that the attackers were forced to retreat.

Despite repelling the assault, casualties were recorded. The military acknowledged that some personnel lost their lives, although details remain limited.

In his reaction, Tinubu, through his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, said the fallen troops demonstrated uncommon bravery in the face of danger.

“I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers… who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country.”

He maintained that ongoing military operations have continued to put pressure on insurgent groups, suggesting that the latest attack reflects a desperate pushback.

“The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation.”

The President also used the moment to rally the armed forces, urging troops across different theatres of operation not to lose focus despite the losses.

“Do not lose heart, do not be weary, do not be discouraged… The government will always stand by the Armed Forces.”

He further called on Nigerians to support the military and avoid narratives that undermine their efforts, stressing that those on the frontlines remain central to the country’s security architecture.

“These soldiers are our heroes; unforgettable and irreplaceable.”

The latest incident highlights the persistent volatility in Borno and the wider North-East, where troops continue to confront insurgent groups despite years of sustained operations. While the military insists it is making gains, attacks such as this underline the evolving nature of the threat and the pressure on frontline formations.

For now, beyond the official statements, the reality remains stark another round of losses for a military still deeply engaged in a long-running war, and more families left to bear the cost.
