In a swift diplomatic move, President Bola Tinubu took part on Thursday in an urgent virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to confront the unfolding political turmoil in Guinea-Bissau, triggered by Wednesday’s military coup.
The extraordinary session, conducted via Zoom, assembled West African heads of state and government to discuss coordinated responses amid the crisis. Reports confirm that Guinea-Bissau’s military, having detained President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, declared General Horta Nta Na Man as interim leader, set to govern for the next twelve months.

Captured moments in photographs shared by the State House Media Department revealed President Tinubu engaging actively from Abuja during the high-level summit.
Notably, Tinubu chaired the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for two terms until June 2025, when the Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio succeeded him in the role.
ECOWAS has faced increasing challenges from coup attempts in the region, and this emergency summit underscores the bloc’s determination to safeguard stability and democratic governance across West Africa.
