President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles on clinching bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), praising their unyielding spirit after a heartbreaking semi-final exit.

The Nigerian national team secured third place on Saturday by overpowering seven-time champions Egypt in a tense penalty shootout, following a dominant regular-time performance. This triumph came days after their semi-final penalty loss to hosts Morocco on Wednesday, which dashed hopes of a title.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded the players’ determination. “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” he said.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and, exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off. We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medals on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco. Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels as good as gold.”
