President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a prominent legislator and former Speaker of the House of Representatives during Nigeria’s Third Republic (1992–1993), Agunwa Anaekwe.
In a statement he personally signed on Tuesday, the President commended Anaekwe’s steadfast courage and leadership amid turbulent political times. “Chief Anaekwe was a bold, courageous, and disciplined leader. He provided the needed leadership in parliament during utter chaos and rudderlessness. He was a true democrat and well-versed parliamentarian,” President Tinubu said.
Remembering his personal experience as a National Assembly member in the Third Republic, the President said, “I vividly recall the sacrifices of those who dared the military authorities. Chief Anaekwe is remembered in history as one who opposed military dictatorship and the truncation of democratic governance.”
