In a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s climate action and green economy initiatives, President Bola Tinubu has approved the terms of reference for the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action (SPEC).
According to a statement issued by Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, this development is part of the President’s efforts to enhance the country’s engagement in global climate negotiations and promote sustainable economic growth.
The statement explained that the Office of SPEC will serve as the lead negotiator on climate-related matters, reporting directly to the President.
It will also oversee the integration of the National Carbon Market Activation Plan into the Federal Government’s climate action plans, coordinate climate action activities across various ministries and agencies, and engage with international organizations to advance global climate goals.
Additionally, the President has expanded the membership of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions (P-CAGE).
The new members include representatives from the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology, NNPCL, Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, and the Energy Transition Office.
The Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions will be inaugurated in July.
