With a need to consciously keep ourselves and digital space safe, TikTok one of the leading social media platforms have taken a bold step to kick off its SaferTogether campaign in Lagos. It’s the first safety campaign for the company in Sub-Saharan Africa which is aimed to empower creators, parents, teachers and guardians with the knowledge of the app’s safety features to ensure a positive in-app experience for everyone.

Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, Director of Public policy and Government relations, TikTok in Africa, stressed that this project is important, “And that’s because safety is a thing we take seriously as a company and this is why we think doing proactive campaigns like these would help our users enjoy their experiences on TikTok. Our mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy with safety right in the center of the inspiration.”

Adding to the plans for the campaign, Fortune mentioned that, “The campaign is not a one off as it’s a long one and it combines a series of online activities in the TikTok app as well as offline activities. So for now what we would be doing is sending out push notifications to users to remind them constantly how they can keep themselves or their accounts safe. Offline we are partnering with the Data Scientist Network which would be organizing workshops for parents, guardians, teachers to help teach the young ones under their care how they can be safe. We are hoping that this would be a peer to peer model where those that receive the training can go on and teach other members of their community.”

As part of the company’s commitment to ensuring safety on the platform, a partnership with Data Science Nigeria was announced. DSN is an organization committed to building Africa’s AI talents ecosystem, and developing solutions for governance, education, health, retail, and finance.

Speaking further in their role in the safety campaign, Aanu Oyeniran, Delivery and Performance at DSN stated that, “What we are trying to do with TikTok is to drive the awareness that an ordinary person knows as regards safety in the physical world to the digital world. Which means for everything you do that gives you that consciousness to be safe you can also do it in the digital world.”

DSN will conduct in-community workshops with parents, teachers, and guardians in schools in to educate and empower them to understand the digital world and how they can help young people stay safe online and create a better internet experience
