There is palpable fear in Delta State yesterday as the police uncovered plans by some hoodlums to bomb some polling booths in the state.
The police, however, intercepted the vehicle conveying the explosives at the Ugheli-Patani road.
The police operatives recovered 128 explosives and five pieces of electronic detonators from the hoodlums and reportedly handed them over to the Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD) of the police.
It was gathered that the operatives led by Commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Edeleke, while on patrol intercepted a white Hilux van without number plate and flagged it down with the intention to search the occupants but they took to their heels and ran into the bush.
Sunday Sun further gathered that when the vehicle was searched, 128 pieces of explosives and five pieces of electronic detonators were found at the back compartment of the van.
Acting state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Chuks Orisewezie, who confirmed the story, said: “The van and the explosives are now in Delta State Police Command Headquarters, Asaba, and have been handed over to the Explosives and Ordinance Department (EOD) of the Command.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has assuaged the fears of the people of the state, saying there was no cause to be apprehensive as the police were on top of the situation.
He, however, admonished members of the public to be vigilant and security conscious, adding that people should promptly report any strange objects to the police or any security agency nearest to them.
