Team Nigeria begins chase for athletics medals

Team Nigeria’s athletes will hit the track running on today, as the athletics competition at the 23rd Commonwealth Games officially begins in Glasgow, Scotland.

The morning session will see Nigeria heavily represented across sprinting, hammer throw and para-athletics, with the country’s stars eager to open their medal quest in style.

Action kicks off at 10:10 a.m. with the men’s 100m first round. National sprint king Favour Ashe, fresh off a season’s best of 9.93 seconds at the Commonwealth Games Trials in Lagos in June, lines up in Heat 1, Lane 4, as one of the favourites to advance. He’ll be joined in the hunt by Fakorede Adekalu, who races in Heat 10, Lane 3, carrying a season’s best of 9.98 seconds — Nigeria hoping to send both men through to the next round.

At 11:40 a.m., the focus shifts to the field, where seasoned thrower Oyesade Olatoye enters the women’s hammer throw qualification (Group A). Olatoye, boasting a season’s best of 70.46m, throws 13th as she chases a spot in the final.

The morning programme wraps up at noon with the women’s 100m first round, featuring rising star Miracle Ezechukwu in Heat 8, Lane 8. The teenager goes in with a season’s best of 11.15 seconds, eyeing progression to the next stage.

Nigeria’s day isn’t done there — in the evening, Eucharia Iyiazi steps up in the women’s F57 shot put final at 7:05 p.m., offering the country an early shot at a medal as the Games’ athletics programme gets underway.

Ahead of the action, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President Chief Tonobok Okowa struck a confident tone, calling this year’s Glasgow-bound squad one of Nigeria’s strongest in recent memory.

“The number of top Nigerian athletes participating at the Games is encouraging. This is an excellent spirit and it signals a renewed commitment to representing their fatherland at international competitions,” Okowa said, adding that the calibre of stars on the roster has raised expectations for the team’s showing in Scotland.

With seasoned internationals and hungry newcomers both in action from day one, Team Nigeria is out to make an immediate statement at the 23rd Commonwealth Games.
