Nigeria added to its medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Sunday after Ruth Asuquo Nyong won silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, lifting a combined 168kg.
According to the NSC media, Nyong opened with a 75kg snatch, placing her third behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom (85kg) and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry (77kg). She then produced a strong 93kg clean and jerk to finish on 168kg overall, edging past Henry by one kilogram to claim second place.

Saikhom took gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg, while Henry settled for bronze on 167kg.
Earlier Sunday, Nigeria’s men’s 3×3 basketball team lost 21-16 to hosts Scotland in their fourth group match, dropping their record to 1-3. Their only win so far came against Cape Verde in the opening fixture.
Nigeria now has three gold and four silver medals at the Games, with several athletes still in contention as competition continues in Glasgow.
