•Begins public sensitisation on tax payment
By Brown Chimezie
The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESiRS), has shut down 16 hotels within the metropolis for failing to remit tax liabilities to the state government.
The affected establishments were sealed by the enforcement team of the agency after they were served court orders.
There was stiff resistance from managers of the hotels when the revenue officers attempted to enforce the court order but for the intervention of the Chairman of ESiRS, Emmanuel Nnamani, who was part of the team and ensured that the order was fully carried out to serve as deterrent to other defaulters.
According to Emmanuel Nnamani, 16 corporate entities in the state were served court orders for their failure to remit their tax to the coffers of the government.
He added that the affected companies were served demand notices and warning letters, intention to sue and court summons informing them of the plan by the state government to proceed to court if they failed to meet up with their tax payment, but they failed to heed to the warnings.
Nnamani said the agency would embark on sensitisation programmes in order to orientate the public on the need for them to remit their taxes to the state government.
He added that developing the state requires funding which can only be achieved through payment of taxes.
Nnamani further said that the present administration in the State is going to bring the tax orientation system back to enlighten the people on the importance of paying their taxes.
He opined that developed countries were built from taxes paid by the people, adding that if people pay their taxes, they can hold the government responsible if they fail to develop the State.
