Dangote Refinery has assured members of the public that the ongoing strike by a union representing fuel tanker drivers will not result in a petrol shortage.
The assurance was given by refinery spokesperson Anthony Chiejina, following the commencement of the industrial action on Monday, amid the refinery hiring its own drivers to deliver gasoline to retailers.
Speaking with AFP, Chiejina said, There is no fuel shortage, everything is going on.”
Dangote Refinery’s reduction of petrol prices while shaking up long-entrenched players in Nigeria’s oil sector has led to monopoly concerns.
In August, the company announced plans to deploy thousands of trucks powered by compressed natural gas to distribute its petrol nationwide, but the move was delayed over logistics.

According to the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Dangote’s new drivers are being told not to join the union as a condition for being hired; an allegation that has been denied by Dangote.
“What Dangote has shown over time is that he’s not prepared to have workers that will have a say in his employment,” NUPENG PresidentWilliams Akporeha said to Arise TV on Tuesday.
The allegation was denied by Dangote spokesman Chiejina, who called it “cheap blackmail”.
“It’s not true… nobody has done that and nobody has ever,” he stated.
