United Bank for Africa (UBA) has moved against what it described as false, defamatory and malicious reports circulating on social media about its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, insisting the claims are entirely fabricated and aimed at damaging his reputation.
The bank said the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, leading to the arrest of three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and spread of the false content. UBA identified them as Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
According to the bank, investigations are ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecutions of others involved in originating or amplifying the reports.

UBA also issued a cease-and-desist notice to individuals, platforms and entities sharing the publication, directing them to immediately remove the content and halt further dissemination. It further asked those involved to preserve all records, communications and digital metadata pending legal action.
The lender warned that failure to comply could trigger lawsuits, including claims for defamation, injunctions, damages and other remedies allowed by law.
UBA said it remains committed to protecting the reputation, privacy and integrity of its brand and that of its chairman, adding that it would pursue every available civil and criminal legal option to hold those responsible accountable. The statement was signed by Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, UBA, Lagos.
