Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have allegedly killed a farmer in the Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, sparking demands for justice from the victim’s kinsmen.
The deceased farmer, Solomon Yusuf, was attending a wedding ceremony in Rakpami community when the suspected herdsmen launched an attack, according to a press statement signed by Musa Emmanuel-Dnasuwa, Secretary of the Gbagyi Cultural Renaissance Foundation in the state.
Expressing concern over the activities of these “disgruntled” herdsmen, the statement described their actions as callous and disruptive to the relative peace enjoyed by the people of Toto LGA. It accused them of indiscriminate killings, crop destruction, and making threats against those who oppose them.
According to the statement, the recent victim, Solomon Yusuf, was gruesomely murdered during a wedding ceremony on Saturday, July 1, 2023, for reasons unknown to the community. Although a suspect was reportedly apprehended by the community vigilante and handed over to the police, the Gbagyi Cultural Renaissance Foundation is closely monitoring the situation, expecting that the law will take its course.
Emmanuel-Dnasuwa expressed gratitude to HRH Musa Abu-Shekwo, the Osu Yelwa, whose timely intervention prevented the escalation of tension and discouraged the local youth from taking matters into their own hands.
He called on the Executive Chairman of Toto LGA, Hon. Aliyu Abdullahi-Tashas, and Governor Abdullahi Sule to collaborate with security agencies to establish measures that would prevent further breakdown of law and order in the area.
“We want to put the government on notice that our people have had enough of these excesses,” the statement read. It further appealed for urgent government action to address the issue, emphasizing the peaceful nature of the Gbagyi people and their desire to maintain their reputation.
When our correspondent contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ramhan Nansel, stated that the command had not yet received official information regarding the alleged killing. However, he assured residents of Nasarawa State that the Commissioner of Police, Maiyaki Baba, is diligently working to ensure the safety of everyone in the state.
