Not fewer than five people were reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen in two separate attacks in Mbawa and Nyiev council wards, Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.
Daily Sun gathered that the suspected herders, who were reportedly armed, had stormed Udei in Nyiev council ward, where they killed four people in a fish pond.
A source from the community told newsmen in Makurdi that the victims, three women and a man, were attacked at about 3-4pm, last Thursday, when they went fishing in the pond. The source also said on Saturday, March 25, 2023, herdsmen killed one person in the Ijirgh community in Mbawa council ward, also in Guma LGA of the state.
A native, who didn’t want to be named, said the last victim, Tyowooga Iorpuu, was killed on Sunday, March 26, 2023 afternoon by herders who raided the Chongu village, Mbagwa -Mbawa, Daudu in Guma LGA of the state. The source said late Tyowooga, aged 45, is survived by his wife, Mrs Mlumun Tyowooga, and five children.
Confirming the incident, the Chief Security Officer of Guma LGA, Christopher Waku, said: “Four people were killed on Thursday last week, in the fish pond.
“ They went fishing, three women and a man, at about 3-4pm. They were killed in Udei under Nyiev council ward.
“Then, on Saturday, they killed one person in the Ijirgh community in Mbawa council ward, all suspected to be herdsmen.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Catherine Anene, said she was yet to receive such information.
