A suspected vandal, Jeremiah Daniel, has been apprehended by members of the Isiuja Vigilante Group in Nsukka, Enugu State, for allegedly tampering with electrical installations belonging to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL).
In a statement by the Head of Communication, MEDL, Emeka Ezeh, he explained that the suspect was caught in possession of 500mm intermediate cables, earth wire and copper conductors believed to be property of the company.
Ezeh noted that the suspect and the recovered materials had been handed over to the Nsukka Urban Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
While commending the vigilance of the Isiuja community, Ezeh described the arrest as a demonstration of how community collaboration can effectively help protect public utilities.
“There is no way we can protect all electricity infrastructures across our network without the support and cooperation of our stakeholders,” he said.
Ezeh decried the growing menace of vandalism within the company’s network, lamenting that the recurring incidents have continued to undermine MEDL’s efforts to provide stable power supply to customers.
He revealed that the company spends millions of naira annually to replace vandalized equipment—an unsustainable cost burden that ultimately affects service delivery.
Ezeh, therefore, urged residents and customers across Enugu State to remain vigilant and take ownership of the electricity infrastructure serving their communities, just as the Isiuja Vigilante Group had done.
