The Lagos State Police Command said reports of a retaliatory cult clash in the Surulere area, particularly Shitta, Akerele, Itire/Aguda, and Ishaga axis, of the state are false.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

Tensions rose over the weekend over the fatal shooting of an alleged cult leader, Adedipe Adeyinkan also known as “Agali”, in the Iponri area of the state on Saturday evening.

Confirming Adeyinkan’s demise in an X post on Sunday, the command said he was shot around 11:30 pm Saturday on National Stadium Bridge inward Iponri.

In its Monday statement, the command said a circulating message alleging a possible cult-related clash in some areas of the state, particularly Shitta, Akerele, Itire/Aguda, and Ishaga axis, purportedly in retaliation for the reported incident was untrue.

“The command wishes to categorically state that it has taken proactive and decisive measures to forestall any breakdown of law and order in the affected areas and beyond.

“Following the initial report of the incident, prompt deployment of police personnel and operational assets was carried out to all the mentioned locations and other adjoining communities,” the command stated.

Adebisi said the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, has directed intensified patrols, strategic positioning of officers, and increased police visibility across the identified flashpoints to ensure the safety of lives and property.

“The areas are well secured, and adequate security coverage has been emplaced to deter any unlawful gatherings or activities,” the command added.

The command reassured members of the public that there was no cause for alarm.

“Residents are encouraged to go about their lawful duties without fear or apprehension, as the police and other security agencies remain fully on ground and committed to maintaining peace and order.

“While the command acknowledges the concerns raised, members of the public are advised to disregard unverified rumours capable of creating panic and instead rely on credible information from official sources.

“Residents are also enjoined to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through any of the Command’s emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630929,” the statement further reads.

The command said it remains resolute in its duty to protect all residents and will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure that peace prevails across the state.
