Supreme Court to hold valedictory session for late Justice Ogwuegbu on May 14

The Supreme Court of Nigeria will hold a valedictory session on May 14, 2025, at 2 p.m. to honour the late Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, who passed away on October 28, 2024, at age 91. The Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, is expected to attend.

According to Dr Festus Aweneri Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations, Justice Ogwuegbu died peacefully in his sleep.

Born on March 16, 1933, in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma, Imo State, he began his judicial career as a High Court Judge in Imo State in 1976, serving as Administrative Judge in Owerri (1976–1979) and Aba (1980). He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1987, serving in Ibadan and Lagos, and appointed to the Supreme Court in 1992.

Ogwuegbu was seconded to The Gambia’s Supreme Court from 1999 to 2002, returning to Nigeria’s Supreme Court until his retirement in 2003. Chief Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun will lead the session, joined by justice sector stakeholders to pay tribute to his legacy.
