Former Governor of Plateau and member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sir Fidelis Tapgun, has extended his felicitations to Governor Caleb Mutfwang over his victory at the Supreme Court.
The apex court had last Friday reversed the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had upturned the judgment of the Plateau State Election Petitions Tribunal that upheld the election of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
The judgment was sequel to the petition filed by the All Progressives Congress APC candidate, Yilwatda Nentawe Goshwe, challenging the declaration of Mutfwang by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the duly elected candidate
Tapgun told our correspondent in an interview in his Jos home on Saturday that it’s time for citizens of the state to close ranks and support Mutfwang for the success of his administration and peace in the state.
The former governor, who was also a former minister and former ambassador to Kenya, had, in the wake of the Appeal Court judgment, which sacked Mutfwang asked the governor to congratulate the Nentawe, whom the appellate court had declared as the winner of the March 18 governorship election.
He had contended that the PDP was the product of its misfortune at the appellate court as it failed to follow the right guidelines and procedures in conducting the primary elections that produced candidates for the 2023 general elections.
However in congratulating Mutfwang, Tapgun said that even though nothing has changed in his position, he’s congratulating Mutfwang because the Supreme Court is the apex court and nobody can change the situation.
He asked his party, the PDP to take advantage of the judgment to reinvent itself and correct all the mistakes of the past.
He said, “I congratulate His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, on his victory in the Supreme Court. I am appealing to all Plateau people to rally round the governor for the peace and prosperity of the system
“Even though my stand on the election and the subsequent court processes has not changed, since the pronouncement of the Supreme Court is final, we have to accept the judgment and move on. What is important is the survival, peace and tranquility of the state.
“For now, nobody’s position can change the situation. We only need to align with the judgment and pray for the governor and his team. This is our state and God has destined Mutfwang to be our governor at this time and we are not capable of changing God’s will.
Tapgun expressed his readiness to contribute his quota to the development, peace and progress of the state.
