Submissions for Earl Lovelace Short Fiction set to open

Established by Nigerian writer and publisher, Onyeka Nwelue, and Administered by @abibimanpublishing, entries for Earl Lovelace Short Fiction Prize will open on 15th of October, 2023. Writers are advised to submit their themed short story at: [email protected] with the Subject: EARL LOVELACE PRIZE, to be in with a chance of winning the prize of £500. Winner will be announced on July 13th, 2024.

The themes include Desperation,  Consent, and Prostitution. The competition is meant for a new work of fiction of 2,500 words. Shortlisted works will be published in an anthology by Abibiman Publishing.

Submission deadline is March 5th, 2024,  June 12th is slated for the announcement of a shortlist of 7 entries. The winner will be announced on July 13th.

The inaugural edition of the prize was won by Oluwabusayo Madariola, with her story, “The Season of Heavy Rains.”

Jury Members include  Hymar David (Chair). Davis grew up in Lagos and Ogun states, Nigeria. He is the author of a memoir on growing up with a disability. He lives in Uyo with his nine plants, wears a nose ring he sometimes forgets about, and spends his time working on his next book, hiking and reading classical poetry.

Timi-Nipre Ovuru is a young writer, freelance/features writing journalist, poet, Actor, Convener – Humans of Bayelsa and Rap, Poetry and Palmwine.

She’s the founder of The Mangrove House Literary Society. Timi is from Bayelsa State. She is the C.E.O Zips and buttons couture and studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt Nigeria, where she majored in play writing. She holds a certificate in creative writing from the Elechi Amadi School of Creative Writing Port Harcourt, majoring in fiction writing and, upon leaving the university of Port Harcourt, went on to study for a diploma in freelance and features writing at the London school of Journalism.

Timi-Nipre is the author of Cyclamens, Abiku and Words From My Fathers, and presently works as Press Secretary to the Wife of the Governor of Bayelsa State. Her debut audio poetry EP, OKPOR-OTU, will be released December, 2023. She loves to cook, read and visit mind blowing destinations. She loves to drink red wine and creamy coffee. She calls herself the SUNSHINE DUCHESS, as she believes the world is too filled with darkness and needs all the light it can get.

Noni Salma is an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker who is passionate about decolonizing narratives of black and brown trans, queer folks by centering them in her writing in ways that are fresh, inspiring and kicking.

She made the nomination list for The Future Awards Africa Prize for Screen Producer in 2018 and Best of Nollywood Award 2018 for her screenplay in the movie, We Don’t Live Here Anymore.

Her Personal essay, “My Daddy’s Daughter”, won the 2nd place Queer West African Women’s Writing Contest, 2021. She is one of the seven transgender writers on the 2022 GLAAD list for her comedy pilot, BADASS.

Justyn Settles (Nicholasville, Kentucky) is a poet and speaker from the United States, who preaches the power of poetry to incite revolutions, tear down borders and heal the soul. Passionate about finding light in darkness, he holds a master’s degree in theology and a bachelor’s degree in Latin American poetry.

He has just published his new book, El Espectro Del Amor, with Alcorce Ediciones in Puebla, Mexico. Over the last fourteen years, he has lived in Puebla, Mexico, while his two cats take care of his home in Kentucky.

Born on 10th July, 1989, Timothy Chibuike Anyanwu graduated with Second Class (Upper Division), from History and International Studies, University of Nigeria in 2015, and obtained his Masters of Science, from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2017.

He is currently at the point of completing his PhD in History from University of Nigeria. Timothy is a member of Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), Trans-Atlantic Research Council, and a fellow of Social Science Research Council (SSRC), New York

Cindy Allman is a Jamaican living and working in Trinidad and Tobago. She is a book blogger, book reviewer, book club host, content creator and is a very active member of the Bookstagram community. She freelances as a digital marketer, spends half the year being a digital nomad. Cindy is also the creator of #ReadCaribbean month which takes place in June. Her mission is to get people to read, read more, read widely and read Caribbean.
