Scripture Union (SU) Abuja Region has celebrated its 20th anniversary since its establishment in 2022.

The event which coincides with the union’s 15th Regional conference held in Abuja with attendees from various zones across the Federation.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the Union’s National Chairman, Prof Madu O. Iwe, said the event called for celebration because of the milestone achievements of the Christian Union, adding that the Union has addressed a number of spiritual issues through various themes in the past years.

He noted that this year’s theme: “Looking unto Jesus”, was very timely given the myriad of economic and security challenges bedevilling the country.

“It is a year we are being challenged to look unto Jesus, holding Him very firm, knowing that we do not have anywhere else to run to. Our society has been terribly terrified, dehumanized, traumatized, starved of everything good, deprived of peace and tranquility, and even livelihood. So, we have nothing else to do than to look unto our Saviour as such time as this,” Iwe said.

Regional Chairman of the Union, Dr. J.O Abah who chaired the event noted that the Union has had a tremendous impact on the lives of Christians and Nigeria by extension.

He explained that the union has gained roots in various regions and communities across Nigeria which is one of the cardinal points of their mission statement.

He said, “Scripture Union has impacted the lives of many Nigerians based the work we do. What we do is propagate the Gospel reaching out to young people and families in every community and nurturing them to become committed Christians of influence.”

“Our theme, “Looking unto Jesus” is very appropriate for the times we find ourselves in. While the wait on our government to help rescue innocent Nigerians from the hands of criminals and stop their activities, is proving futile, we are being encouraged to look unto Jesus for answers to our individual problems and that of the Church and our nation Nigeria.”

Also speaking on the significance of the occasion, the Methodist Bishop of Kubwa Diocese, Rt. Rev. Chikwendu Igwe who doubles as the Area Patron of Scripture Union Abuja, said the event also provided the opportunity for Christians to converge and intercede for the nation and change the state of affairs.

“Nigeria is passing through a difficult time. We have great potentials for greatness in every area but we need God’s intervention in leadership because if we get it right at the leadership level, we will get a lot working.

All of us are stakeholders and we the citizens need to pray as Christians and we need to be actively involved in the political process of selecting God-fearing leaders. So, my prayer is that everyone of us will be involved in making a great Nigeria,” the cleric stated.

Scripture Union is a non-denominational and interdenominational Christian body whose focus is in grooming individuals, families and the society at large to moral sanity through Christian teachings.
