The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos, has described the “no work, no pay” policy imposed by the Federal Government as vindictive, unfair and inhumane.

Declaring support for the striking resident doctors, the association warned against steps that would further worsen the precarious situation of medical service delivery in the country.

The association, addressing pressmen yesterday in Lagos, said the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) were facing multifaceted challenges, which led to the action.

Chairman, NMA, Lagos zone, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu said: “It is crucial for all parties involved to engage in transparent and constructive discussions to identify common ground and address the concerns that have prompted this strike.

“We applaud the unwavering determination and unwavering commitment of our doctors and strongly urge the government to fulfill its pledge of meeting their demands.

“These demands include; the implementation of the one-for-one replacement policy for healthcare workers, improved salary structures, hazard allowances, and a revitalized residency training program. NMA Lagos stands with NARD on this.”

Calling on government at all levels to conduct a thorough examination of emergency response protocols, he said allocating sufficient funding to healthcare facilities, and making investments in essential medical equipment and supplies wes crucial.

“By providing our doctors with the necessary resources, we can ensure they are equipped to deliver effective care in the face of unforeseen challenges,” he noted.
