Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has urged leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to concentrate on mobilising voters in their states rather than accompany President Bola Tinubu from one campaign rally to another, as the party announced additional appointments into its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kalu, who represents Abia North in the Senate, called for a smaller presidential campaign entourage, saying party leaders would contribute more to the APC’s electoral fortunes by working in their respective states, local government areas and wards.

His appeal came as the APC released a supplementary campaign council list featuring former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello; former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd); Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; former Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, and Bayelsa State party chieftain, David Lyon, among others.

In a statement titled, “The APC Presidential Campaign Council and the Need for a Leaner Campaign Train,” Kalu urged council members to give greater attention to grassroots mobilisation while allowing the President to attend rallies with a smaller team.

“The President should be allowed to attend campaign rallies without an unnecessarily large number of people following him in the campaign train,” he said.

The former Abia State governor said party leaders should return to their states to engage voters and organise support for the APC, maintaining that following the President across the country would leave important mobilisation work unattended at home.

Kalu, named Coordinator for Parliamentary Mobilisation for the South East in the Senate, expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure re-election, saying sustained work at the grassroots would strengthen the party’s chances.

He argued that a leaner entourage would reduce costs and improve coordination, while enabling other campaign council members to concentrate on their responsibilities within their constituencies.

The senator also urged party leaders to explain the administration’s policies and programmes to voters and sustain engagement with local party structures.

Announcing the supplementary appointments in a statement on Wednesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the new list expanded the leadership and membership of the President Bola Tinubu/APC 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.

According to him, the appointments cut across directorates, sectoral groups, mobilisation structures and operational units established for the election.

The directorates cover election planning, mobilisation, youth mobilisation, security, health, education, the creative industry, new media, financial and technical services, infrastructure mobilisation and civil society engagement.

The additional appointees include political leaders, entertainers, professionals and community representatives drawn into the party’s campaign structures for stakeholder engagement and mobilisation.

“Our great party reiterates its commitment to ensuring effective coordination among the various components of the PCC as preparations remain in top gear for the 2027 general election,” Morka said.

The supplementary appointments further broaden the council’s membership across political, professional and sectoral groups, with responsibilities extending beyond presidential rallies to engagement with voters and stakeholders nationwide.

At the council’s inaugural meeting in Abuja on October 20, Deputy Director-General, South II, Benjamin Kalu, had said the APC would campaign on the administration’s projects and policies.

He said the party would focus on explaining the achievements of the Renewed Hope Agenda to Nigerians as part of its mobilisation for Tinubu’s re-election.

Orji Kalu’s appeal places emphasis on state and community-level campaigning, with party leaders expected to sustain voter engagement in their respective areas while the President attends rallies across the country.
