Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has welcomed the Senate’s passage of a bill seeking to alter the Constitution to allow for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

Sani, who spoke on Channels TV’s Politics Today, described the development as a major step towards strengthening security across the country.

The governor said he was confident that Nigerians would embrace the decision, given the growing calls for a policing structure that allows states to play a more direct role in tackling insecurity.

“I’m happy to say that the bill for the alteration of the Constitution for the establishment of state police in Nigeria was passed today,” Sani said.

“Of course, I have no doubt in my mind that this is something that will be welcomed by every Nigerian.”

His comments followed a question on who should be held responsible if insecurity persists after the state police becomes operational.

The Kaduna governor did not directly address the issue of accountability but maintained that the Senate’s decision represented progress in efforts to improve security nationwide.
