- We’re reaching out to them – Customs
From Sola Ojo, Kaduna
The leadership of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) on Tuesday expressed anger over the unfortunate stampede that led to the death of seven persons during the sales of confiscated rice by the Nigeria Customs Service a few weeks ago.
The group lamented that the leadership of Customs under Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, as the Comptroller General of the anti-smuggling agency has not visited nor compensated the families of the affected Nigerians in the unfortunate incident in Lagos.
But, Chief Superintendent of Customs National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Inuwa, told Daily Sun via a mobile phone call that Customs is putting modalities in place to visit the families of the victims.
To him, “We put measures in place to avoid what happened in Lagos. Unfortunately it happened that way.
“So we are reaching out to the affected families. We are conscious of the fact that lives are involved and every life is sacred”, he said.
Addressing a press conference at the popular Arewa House, Kaduna, President of NYCN, Isah Abubakar noted that there is the need to visit the family of the deceased and pay compensation to their loved ones so the affected persons left behind can move on.
“Is either the Customs boss visit and compensate these people as soon as possible or he should vacate office.
*We should not forget that These are fathers, husbands, and uncles. Something must be done urgently. If not, the leadership of the NYCN, as we have always known as the voice of the voiceless will push our demand up the ladder.
“While preparations are ongoing for the candlelight vigil in front of Custom Headquarters, we are calling on aggrieved Nigerians, fellow compatriots, to come out in mass in memory of those who lost their lives to join us at the candlelight vigil and protest in the morning before the comment of similar action in various customs commands across the country.
