In a decisive move, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has declared a seven-day warning strike commencing from Monday, March to Monday, March 25.
The decision was announced by the Chairman of the Federal University of Lafia chapter on Monday, Comrade Obang Imran, during a press briefing held at the university’s gates.
Addressing journalists, Comrade Daniel Dajen highlighted the pressing issues driving the strike action, citing the Renegotiation of 2009 FGN/SSANU Agreement, demanding a review of the agreement reached between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and SSANU in 2009 to address current challenges and ensure equitable terms for university staff.
“Reconstitution of Governing Councils:** There is a call for the prompt reconstitution of governing councils across Nigerian universities to ensure effective governance and decision-making processes.”
“Payment of 4 Months Withheld Salaries:** SSANU members are demanding the immediate payment of salaries withheld for four months, which has significantly affected their livelihoods.”
Comrade Dajen also cited the release of 50 Billion Earned Allowances while advocating for the release of earned allowances amounting to 50 billion Naira, owed to university staff for their dedicated service.
“Improved Funding for Universities:** SSANU is pushing for enhanced funding for Nigerian universities to address infrastructure deficits, improve academic resources, and enhance the overall quality of education.”
Comrade Dajen emphasized the necessity of these demands, stating, “We cannot overemphasize the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of our universities.”
