The President General of the Igbo Community Association, (ICA) Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja , Chapter, Engr. Ikenna Ellis Ezenekwe, has called on the people of the former Eastern region to continue to mark May 30th , saying that it is symbolic of the history of the region.
He averred that 30th May was a date of reflection for Eastern Nigeria and should be commemorated.
In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday in preparation for this year’s anniversary, Ezenekwe assured that the rich history of that date will not be allowed to die.
He decried the removal of the teaching of History subject in schools, calling on the government to restore the subject to enable our children to have knowledge of the past.
The statement reads, “What this day means to the people of the former Eastern Region should never be forgotten… particularly for the budding youths who have been denied the chance to be taught their history in schools.
“May 30 marked the birth of a new identity and was a vehicle to achieve the collective aspirations, dreams, and struggles of the people of the former Eastern Region.
“But the hands of evil fought vehemently against the dream. 3 million souls were sent to martyrdom to stop the realization of the dream. Still, the dream lives on.
“Unfortunately, this generation is tasked with the daunting duty of keeping the dream alive.
“It also rests on the shoulders of our Orgs and faith-based institutions, including sociocultural organizations that have become too afraid and ashamed to be associated with the May 30 dream.
“But how far can we run from our shadows? We can’t run away from ourselves.
“May the souls of our martyrs continue to rest peacefully.
“We will keep May 30 forever alive,” he said.
